Instrumentation for water and utilities
Water and utilities instrumentation has to withstand outdoor sites, dirty media and years of duty with minimal attention. Flow, level and pressure measurement is specified to the installed conditions first, because reliability in the field is what keeps a network running.

Sector pressures
Why does measurement fail in water and utilities?
The site beats the bench
Foam, shifting flow dynamics and very low pressures defeat instruments only ever characterised in clean water on a bench.
The permit sets the accuracy
Where a permit requires self-monitoring, daily discharge volume has to be measured to ±8% or better at 95% confidence.
Overflow reporting is hourly
A storm overflow discharge has to be published within an hour of starting, so an instrument offline is a reporting failure.
Our approach
How we specify for water and utilities
Flow, level and pressure measurement for treatment and distribution, valves for isolation and control, and the calibration and maintenance that keeps a dispersed asset base accurate. Where a permit obligation sits behind a measurement, the uncertainty it states is part of the specification from the start. Instruments that report to telemetry are also how a dispersed network finds its losses and runs efficiently.

FAQ
Common questions
Which flow meter suits water treatment?
It depends on the media and the line: electromagnetic meters suit conductive, dirty water and need no moving parts; ultrasonic suits larger lines and clamp-on retrofits. We specify the type to the duty.
Does effluent flow monitoring have to meet MCERTS?
Where a permit requires self-monitoring of flow, the Environment Agency’s performance standard applies: the total daily volume of the permitted discharge is measured to a target uncertainty of ±8% or better at a 95% confidence level.
How do you measure level in a water treatment tank?
Radar and ultrasonic level instruments are common for open tanks; hydrostatic for sealed. Choice follows the tank, media and accuracy needed.
How often should water-site instruments be calibrated?
Calibration interval follows duty, regulatory requirement and drift history. We’ll recommend a schedule and run it.
